“A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships“ is the third studio album by English pop rock band The 1975 released on 30 November 2018. It was produced by band members Matthew Healy and George Daniel.
There is here an impressive variety of music, which seems to be as strong as a reflection of how music exists in the Internet – everything is immediately available, free of historical context – as showing off the contents of the band record collection. There is something breathless in how he jumps from Drake-esque Auto-Tune to the smoky western coast of jazz Mine, to Love It If We Made It (which sounds like Tears for Fears around the Song of the Big Chair), to give yourself a chance knowing the tribute to Joy Division’s Disorder. The album has more to offer than a series of clever pastors. Creative songs of the band never limit the joy because of the radio – tune TooTimeTooTimeTooTime is a sparkling tune, and I could not be more in love, it’s a kind of epic song that TV viewers want to impose. But they are also pushing. Vocals on Petrichor hovering over stutterer, glitchy techno; fourth „Sincerity is appalling“ was introduced through the intro, acquiring a mixture of jazz horns and piano. On the other hand, Healy tends to sometimes tell you things he would like to keep for himself. The acoustic ballad Be My Mistake has a beautiful melody, but it is also the sound of a rock star complaining about ladies who want to have sex with him, an equally interesting game for today’s sympathy of the listener, as always. On the other hand, operating without a filter is Matta Healy’s point. The same strange personality seen in his interviews – where loud, rock-star statements compete with painful honesty – is interwoven by a short query. Boldly, the album goes on heavily unfashionable, epochal-bono faith in the power of rock, as a means of communication and as a unifying force in the atomized world. „Instead of calling me, you should draw me in,“ Healy sings. This is not faith without traps. There are moments when his self-appointed role of spokesman generates a little hard work, and ends with a blow melodramas – „modernity has failed us!“ – or singing such things as „rest in peace Lil Peep / poetry is on the streets“.
